Course SummaryThe short course will introduce the basic skills associated with fashion and costume production. It provides vital technical knowledge to underpin your design skills. The course will introduce you to the principles of pattern drafting and garment construction. You will learn how to measure the body effectively and create bespoke blocks and patterns. Garment construction techniques are a strong focus of the course, and you will go on to produce an individually designed garment. More experienced students might want to use the sessions to develop their independent garment making skills in the workshop, with tutor support and guidance. Entry RequirementsNo prior qualifications are necessary for this course, however to get the most out of it you should have intermediate level sewing skills. Qualification ObtainedFashion Production Skills Industry Placement and Field TripsThere are no industry placements and no field trips on this course. However, our experienced team of fashion experts will be happy to advise you about local and national opportunities relating to employers, industry events, exhibitions and fabric sourcing. Learning and Teaching MethodsWeekly topics include: Week 1/2 - Measuring Techniques and Skirt Block/Pattern - Layout Cutting and Marking Week 3/4 - Seams and Darts, Toile Production Week 5/6/7 - Zip Insertion, Waistband, Skirt Fitting Week 8-12 - Individual Designs - Pattern and Toile Development Each of the sessions will begin with a tutor demonstration of specialist techniques and you will then progress through a series of practical tasks. Expert Tutors All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. Assessment MethodsThis course is part of the community learning programme and as such is not subject to any formal assessment. Other Costs and Equipment NeededA basic sewing/pattern making kit will be required and there will be some additional material costs associated with the course. Career Options and ProgressionThis short Fashion Production Skills course will take you through the process of designing and making your own simple garments and is pitched at an introductory to intermediate level.
