Summary This course is designed for anyone wanting to develop a broad base knowledge of the different skills used in the construction industry. You will be introduced to the most used techniques and materials in each trade gaining both a theoretical understanding of these as well as learning how to use the tools associated with them and gaining invaluable practice knowledge of how to apply different materials. This course is largely practical in nature and you will spend a significant proportion of your time in the workshop watching demonstrations and then practising these yourself either individually or working as part of a team. Health and safety in the workshop and on the construction site will be a critical part of your learning ensuring safe working practices at all times. This course is ideal for anyone looking for an entry level role on site or who for those who want to develop skills in a construction trade but haven't, as yet, decided which one. Career progression Successful completion of this course means you can progress onto Level 3 construction courses focusing on a particular pathway, after which you will have the qualifications to continue to higher level study including our own HNC in Construction. Reaching Level 3 will also give you all the skills you need to progress confidently into the workplace in construction generally or into a trade if you have chosen to study a particular pathway. As well as working for an employer, this will also open the door to self-employment if you decide you want to go down this route. Industry placement, field trips and guest speakersThere are no industry placements or field trips planned for this course. How will I learn? The course introduces students to basic skills in the following areas: Carpentry and joinery Plastering Wall and floor tiling Plumbing Brickwork Health and safety Teaching on the course is largely practical in nature with tutors demonstrating techniques and giving students the opportunity to practise them individually and as part of a team. Tutors then support students on a one-to-one basis giving advice and feedback during practical exercises. There is some theory work to allow participants to gain an understanding of materials and their attributes and key information on health and safety issues both in domestic settings and in the construction industry more generally. Expert tutorsAll staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice.
