Course SummaryIn the UK, Hair & Beauty is a £4 billion industry employing over 200,000 people, and it’s growing all the time. There are currently over 36,000 salons in the UK, but our students’ skills take them into all sorts of different places including spas, theatre, TV and film. Working in a salon you will learn job specific skills, earn a wage and attend college once a week to gain your qualification. Working in a service industry, you will meet new people and build up regular clients providing services such as colouring, cutting and styling hair. , Entry RequirementsAll Apprenticeships require an initial assessment, interview and employment in the industry. At Level 2 you’ll need four GCSEs at grade 3 (formerly D) or above including English and maths, or a willingness to work towards whilst on programme. You will need to have good people, dexterity and communication skills as well as a desire to work professionally with the general public. Qualification ObtainedCertificate in Skills for Further Education and Employment Industry Placement and Field TripsThe Apprentice must be if full time employment, working a minimum of 30 hours with a contract of employment. You will be expected to complete 20% off the job training as part of your normal working hours. You will need to attend college 1 day per week. The employer must be in agreement to allow the Skills Coach and Specialist Practitioner access to the learner. Learning and Teaching MethodsYou will be taught by tutors who have close links to the industry and the skills to support your training. There will be practical demonstrations, workshops and classroom activities with an opportunity to work on clients. You will explore the underpinning knowledge of how the hair grows and reacts to chemical services. Practical sessions will start in workshops where you will be taught the necessary skills for working on clients in our commercial salon. Expert Tutors All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. Assessment MethodsThis is a level 2 programme, with a duration of up to 24 months. Assessment includes course work, exams (written and practical), oral questioning, a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. Examples of level 2 units include: ‘styling an finishing hair’, ‘setting and dressing hair’, ‘cutting hair using basic techniques’, ‘colour and lightening hair’. You will also complete an end point assessment, which consists of: A practical assessment Oral Questioning The above will assess the apprentice’s professionalism, values, behaviours, communication, safe working practices and consultation skills. Career Options and ProgressionThe Level 2 Apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to progress onto the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Hairdressing. Upon completion, you will have developed the skills and knowledge to work competently in the industry.
