Are you a vehicle paint technician working in an auto accident repair centre or auto bodyshop environment? This IMI training gives you the opportunity to strengthen your skills and gain an industry recognised IMI Accreditation. It’s designed for vehicle technicians whose job involves panel preparation, refinishing and finishing of vehicles after accident damage.

Entry Requirements

This course is for bodyshop technicians already working in vehicle accident repair. You should have at least three years’ experience in panel refinishing and finishing. You must be comfortable working independently and delivering high-quality surfaces and finishes.

What You’ll Learn

This course focuses on high-level paint technician skills used in modern bodyshops:

  • Wet-on-wet application: Apply primer in one pass for efficient refinishing.
  • Spot/rapid repair: Correct small damaged areas to match original paint.
  • Three-stage pearlescent finish application: Apply complex layered finishes for modern vehicle surfaces.
  • Refinishing preparation and techniques: Clean, prepare and finish panels to meet high industry standards.
  • Quality control and finishing: Assess and ensure your work meets required vehicle specifications and defect-free finish.

How You’ll Learn

You will train in a workshop using real vehicle panels and state-of-the-art paint equipment. You’ll get expert demonstrations, supervised practice, and plenty of hands-on work. The course is very much about practical skill. You will be supported by in-session guidance from experienced tutors.

Expert tutors

Our tutors are IMI-accredited assessors and body repair specialists. They have real experience in vehicle refinishing and panel work. They know the trade and will help you build confidence, refine your techniques, and prepare for your assessment.

How You’ll Be Assessed

You will complete both a practical assessment and an online knowledge test:

  • Practical Assessment: You’ll apply complex finishes, work on real panels and deliver fault-free paintwork.
  • Online Test: A short multiple-choice quiz to check your knowledge of materials, techniques and standards.

On success you will be granted your IMI accreditation certificate and ID card.
