It's not too late to start your degree-level journey with B&FC this September. We're here to guide you through your options and help you make the right choice for your future. Call: 01253 504322 or Email: admissions@blackpool.ac.uk

Fuse practical skills with theoretical knowledge in electrical engineering

The Level 4 HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is an industry‑focused qualification designed to give you a solid grounding in how modern electrical and electronic systems are designed, controlled and maintained.

Whether you’re already working in the sector or looking to move into an engineering role, this course develops the technical knowledge, hands‑on skills and problem‑solving ability employers expect from today’s engineers.

What you’ll study

Core electrical and electronic engineering knowledge

You’ll build a strong technical foundation across key areas, including:

  • electrical principles and power systems
  • analogue and digital electronics
  • programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • engineering mathematics for analysis and design

The course focuses on understanding how systems work — and how to diagnose, test and improve them in real operational environments.

Industry‑ready practical skills

Learn using professional tools and equipment

Throughout the course, you’ll work with industry‑standard software and equipment, helping you gain practical experience in:

  • designing and testing electrical systems
  • fault‑finding and system maintenance
  • applying theory to real engineering challenges

You’ll also strengthen technical communication, project planning and problem‑solving skills, essential for progressing into higher‑level engineering roles.

How you’ll learn

Flexible, part‑time study alongside work

Delivered over two years on a part‑time basis, the course combines:

  • structured lectures
  • applied projects
  • practical, coursework‑based assessments

There are no formal exams — instead, you’ll demonstrate your skills through assignments and projects aligned with current industry standards, making this course practical, achievable and career‑focused.

Where can this subject lead?

Career progression

Graduates of the HNC are well-prepared to enter the workforce in a variety of technical roles. Skilled engineers are in high demand and if your priority is to secure employment directly after completing this course, then there are ample opportunities available at both a regional and national level.

The qualification also provides a clear progression route into further study offering students the possibility of progressing to a HND in engineering at Level 5 or a full honours degree at Level 6. You may also consider trying to secure a degree apprenticeship with a preferred employer at this point or simply combine future work with part-time study to complete one of these next stage qualifications and further enhance your employability.

Next steps at B&FC

If you complete this HNC successfully you will be ideally placed to progress onto our BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree, awarded by Lancaster University and delivered here at Blackpool and The Fylde College.

Other study options

You may want to explore the possibility of undertaking a Higher National Diploma at another institution or look to specialise in a specific engineering discipline not offered at B&FC. Options to do this exist in the North West and further afield although we would advise that you check entry requirements to ensure you are eligible to progress.

Employment Opportunities

We have well-developed working relationships with a wide range of engineering employers, through which we help and support learners into sustainable employment. Possible job roles include: engineering technician, electrical engineer, systems designer, electronics engineer.
