Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Adult Evening Class) - Level 2

Summary

This Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course is designed to provide you with an insight into life as a Motor Mechanic or Vehicle Technician and help you to develop the industry-standard knowledge and skills required. This Level 2 Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course is mainly practical-based, with training taking place in our £10 million Advanced Technology Centre.

Career progression

Successful completion of this course will provide you with the for further study at Level 3 and above, leading to higher education and our BEng (Hons) Degree in Automotive Engineering and Technology.

If further study is not in your plans, but a job in the industry is, this course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to seek industry-related employment.

Throughout your time on the course you will receive regular career and progression advice from our team of highly qualified tutors who have many years’ experience working as skilled technicians in the industry.

Entry Requirements

If you are at least 19 years old, looking for a career in the automotive industry, or have a keen interest in learning the skills of this rewarding trade, this one year course is ideal for you.

Mandatory requirements:

  • You must be aged at least 19 before the course starts in September
  • You must be able to attend one evening per/week


Please note: Where wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is a mandatory requirement of the course, it is the responsibility of the learner to ensure that they are able to wear such equipment. Extra costs and equipment

You will need to provide your own safety boots and overalls / boiler suit for practical activities. A typical pair of safety boots should cost no more than £12 and a pair of overalls £15. All other protective equipment will be provided by us.

All tools and equipment are provided for practical sessions and access to computers and all software required for the course is available within the College facilities.

You will be expected to provide your own pen, pencil, basic drawing equipment and a note pad.

What will I learn?

Industry placement, field trips and guest speakers

While industry placement is not mandatory, we have a comprehensive list of local employers who have provided opportunities for our adult student to gain valuable industry experience.

There are no planned mandatory field trips.

How will I learn?

Whilst working towards your Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair qualification you will learn the knowledge and skills required to carry out a range of common vehicle repair and maintenance techniques.

You will learn how to identify the different parts that make up the vehicle systems, how they work and how to remove and replace them as a qualified technician working in the industry would.

Typical practical / theory split is...

  • Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Practical (Workshop – 98 hours)
  • Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Theory (Classroom – 24 hours)
  • Independent Study (2 hours)

You will be taught by tutors who have a wealth of industry experience and a passion for passing on their skills and experiences. Your tutors will get to know how you learn best and tailor their teaching methods to your needs.

There are opportunities for you to discuss your progress and you will be allocated a team manager to support you through every aspect of your learning and development.

This course is mainly practical-based and you will spend most of your time developing knowledge and skills in our state-of-the-art automotive workshops.

There will be occasions where your tutor will deliver sessions in the classroom to help strengthen your knowledge and to prepare you for theory assessments (online tests).

The environment is supportive and includes regular target setting and reviews.

All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver.

The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice.
