AM2

Get established as a Qualified Electrician with your AM2 Assessment

The AM2 Assessment is the next step on your journey to becoming a fully qualified electrician, having completed your Level 3 electrotechnical qualification or advanced apprenticeship. The Assessment which is mainly practical in nature, with a short online component, is a independent test of your competence to carry out electrical work safely and to the highest industry standards. As an aspiring electrician you will need your AM2 to gain your JIB Gold Card (also known as the ECS Gold Card) which gives you access to work as an electrician on building sites across the country.

Taken over the course of two and a half days at our N.E.T. authorised centre, you will undertake a series of electrical tasks within specified time limits, each of them designed to test a key aspect of electrical work from lighting and ring main work to safe isolation and fault diagnosis.

Combining the Assessment with our Pre AM2 training day gives you an even greater chance of success with many candidates passing the Assessment first time by following this route.

Career Progression & Prospects

Once you have gained the AM2 and become a Qualified Electrician, you can apply for your JIB Gold Card and progress onto the Advanced Assessment of Competence which gives you Approved Electrician status. Alternatively, you could take the 2391 - Inspecting and Testing qualification we offer here at B&FC. Both of these options would increase your chances of securing a promotion and/or a higher salary.

  • Section C: Safe Isolation of Circuits
  • Section D: Fault Diagnosis and Rectification
  • Section E: Assessment of Applied Knowledge

How You'll Learn

The AM2 Assessment is an assessment rather than a training course so you will not be expected to learn any additional information or skills during this time.

Expert tutors

All tutors involved in the delivery of courses and/or assessments within the College are approved to teach and/or assess the subjects and modules they deliver.

The approval process ensures that staff delivering and/or assessing a given programme are appropriately qualified, with relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice.

How You'll Be Assessed

The AM2 Assessment is conducted over a total of 16.5 hours, spread across two and a half days.

You'll perform tasks in specially equipped booths that simulate typical electrical installation wiring systems and be observed by specially trained assessors who will ensure you are carrying out all the practical elements of the Assessment to the required standard both from a technical point of view and in line with health and safety procedures.
