Entry Requirements
It is expected that you will already hold an AAT Level 2 Certificate. However, some students may be eligible to begin at Level 3 if they already hold other accounting qualifications and/or have relevant work experience.
To support your application, you will be required to complete a diagnostic assessment in addition to having English and Maths GCSEs or functional skills.

What will I learn?
During the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, you’ll build on your foundational knowledge and develop the practical skills needed for a range of accounting roles. The course is made up of four key units:
Tax Processes for Businesses
You’ll learn how to apply VAT legislation in real business scenarios, including how to calculate, report, and submit VAT returns accurately. The unit also introduces payroll processes and the importance of maintaining ethical and compliant tax records.
Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements
This unit focuses on advanced bookkeeping skills and how to prepare final accounts for sole traders and partnerships. You’ll work with incomplete records, understand depreciation, make end-of-year adjustments, and learn how to interpret financial statements.
Management Accounting Techniques
Discover how to use costing techniques and budgeting tools to support business planning and decision-making. You’ll analyse variances, manage cash flow, and present financial data using spreadsheets to help organisations make informed choices.
Business Awareness
You’ll explore how different businesses operate, including their legal structures, governance, and external influences. The unit also covers professional ethics, internal controls, stakeholder communication, and how technology and data security impact the finance function.
Industry placement, field trips and guest speakers
There are no work placements, field trips or guest speakers associated with this course.
How will I learn?
The AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting is delivered through a blend of classroom-based learning, online resources, and independent study. You’ll attend regular in-person or virtual sessions via our hybrid teaching rooms - either one day or evening per week - where tutors will guide you through each unit using a mix of lectures, discussions, and practical exercises.
Teaching methods include:

- Practice assessments and mock exams
- Online learning platforms for additional study and revision
- One-to-one support from tutors when needed
You’ll also be encouraged to study independently and complete regular assignments to reinforce your learning. The course is structured to help you build confidence gradually, with opportunities to apply your skills in real-world scenarios accessing industry-standard accountancy software in our dedicated computer suites.

Our recruitment process ensures that tutors delivering a given programme are suitably qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. The aim of this is to enrich our students’ learning experience and enable them to get the inside track on what working in the industry is really like.
How will I be assessed?
The AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting is assessed through computer-based exams for each of the four mandatory units. These assessments are designed to test both your knowledge and practical skills.
Assessment details include:
- Computer-based assessments (CBAs): These are timed, formal exams taken under controlled conditions.
- Question types: You’ll complete a mix of multiple choice, short written responses, calculations, and scenario-based tasks.
- Unit assessments: Each unit has its own exam, and you must pass all four to achieve the full qualification.
- Grading: Results are graded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction, depending on your performance across all assessments.
There is no coursework or portfolio involved. All exams are scheduled at various points during the course, giving you time to prepare thoroughly for each one with the support of your tutor.
