Course SummaryStudents from this programme progress to a range of clinical degrees including nursing, radiography, operating department practitioner and paramedic science. You will enjoy a 315-hour placement, including with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals as an NHS Cadet. The course covers all aspects of working in the health and science sector, and includes a substantial placement from which you will gain valuable practical experience to support your career goals. Successfully complete this course and you'll have the UCAS Tariff points required to progress to higher education (degree-level) qualifications. T Levels are two-year, technical study programmes, designed with employers to give you the skills industry needs. You take just one T Level - equivalent to three A Levels. Unlike A Levels, T Levels provide: technical knowledge and skills specific to your preferred career an industry placement of at least 45 days Maths, English and digital skills, as well as a range of clinical skills. Successful students can gain the maximum 168 UCAS points needed to progress to a related degree. Essential Skills – English and Maths If you achieve a grade 3 in GCSE Maths or English you will have to work towards re-sitting these subjects as part of your main study programme. At B&FC, this won’t delay your career journey because you’re working towards these subjects at the same time as your chosen subject. The T Level certificate includes: an overall pass grade for the T Level, shown as pass, merit or distinction a separate grade for the occupational specialism, shown as pass, merit or distinction a separate grade for the core component, using A* to E grades for maths and English qualifications details of the industry placement Qualification ObtainedT Level Technical Qualification in Health Industry Placement and Field TripsYou will be provided with a full induction at your industry placement and complete a mandatory training programme. This course features a mandatory 45-day work placement in a healthcare setting over the two years, designed to enhance learning and increase your employability. T Level students at Blackpool Teaching Hospital secure experience on a variety of different wards and areas of the hospital, which can include Acute Medical Unit, maternity care, the cardiac centre, gastroenterology, respiratory and endocrinology. You could also gain experience within other health settings, such as community care and district nursing. It is highly likely that employers will request any students who attend their setting for an industry placement are vaccinated for COVID:19. You will also need a copy of your vaccination history from your GP to gain occupational health clearance at your placement. We will also invite you to attend relevant field trips and career events, which you could draw from to enhance your CV and personal statement. Students who study healthcare at B&FC have been to: Vietnam, supporting children in orphanages Manchester UCAS Convention BTEC Conference Young Carers Centre Trinity Hospice Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds Learning and Teaching Methods During your three days in college, you will develop practical skills in a weekly clinical skills workshop in our clinical simulation suites. Skills you will develop include: First aid Communication Person-centred care Taking physiological measurements e.g. oxygen levels and blood pressure Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team Maintaining confidentiality Moving and handling You will also work with a range of guest speakers from the health and social work sector, including from the NHS and community-based healthcare, and engage with industry-standard equipment such as our Anatomage table. This is a virtual dissection table using bodies donated to science. This is a full-time course, involving 3 days a week spent at College and 2 days a week on work placement, such as at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. We will also expect you to spend at least 3 hours a week on independent learning. At College, teaching is delivered in groups and supported by group activities and discussions. One-to-one support is also provided to help with completing written assignments. When you start the course we will assign you a progress tutor who will support you throughout your time here. Their role is to help you in setting academic and personal targets, identifying career plans, developing employability skills and monitoring your progress to make sure you realise your full potential. Expert Tutors Our expert tutors provide lots of individual support to help you on your journey towards a career in this hugely rewarding profession. Assessment Methods Year 1 Core units, assessed through an examination and an employer-set project. Subjects you will study include: Working in the Health and Science Sector Good Scientific and Clinical Practice Core Science Concepts including human biology and physiology Health and Wellbeing Safeguarding Diseases and disorders of the human body Year 2 Topics related to Adult Nursing. These units are assessed through practical assignments: Routine clinical tasks e.g. taking physiological measurements Using equipment and resources in clinical tasks e.g. emergency equipment Skin physiology and pathophysiology Providing a personalised care approach Placement The qualification is dependent on you achieving a total of 315 work placement hours. While on placement, you will shadow various types of role, which can include consultants, porters, nurses and occupational therapists. You will contribute to the caring of patients on your designated ward. You will support in the treatment of patients and provide some aspects of personal care. Other Costs and Equipment NeededWe provide the majority of your placement uniform, the only items for this you will need to provide are black trousers and appropriate flat footwear. We will recommend a variety of text books that you could purchase to support you in your studies although copies of these are available within the college library or as E-books however you have the option to purchase your own copy if you wish. You will also need to provide your own writing materials, such as pens, paper and a folder to keep your college work which case be purchased from any supplier therefore prices will vary. You will be allocated a small budget to pay for any College printing costs, however once you have exceeded the limit, you will be liable for any additional printing costs. This T Level programme* prepares you to embark on a relevant degree course and throughout your time here we will support you in progressing towards your chosen career. Following successful completion of your T Level you can apply for degrees in: Adult or children’s nursing, specialising in fields such as cardiac, emergency care and oncology Mental health or sexual health nursing Paramedic science Midwifery Radiography Occupational Therapy Speech and language therapy Operating department practitioner This course provides access to degree apprenticeships in, for example, Nursing. Alternatively you can progress to employment within the health sector straight away. *You can also study our Triple Diploma in Health and Social Work to progress to health-related careers. If you prefer being assessed using coursework as well as exams, or are not sure a clinical career is for you, then our BTEC Triple Diploma may be a better alternative.
