Course SummaryThis qualification aims to develop the knowledge and skills required when providing positive care for people with dementia and their families. The Level 2 Award provides an awareness of the causes and symptoms of dementia. It is suitable for anyone who wants to work in social care either in public or private care environments. It is also suitable for qualified practitioners who have not covered dementia care in previous qualifications. This 6 week course is one of a suite of short 6 week CPD courses available over the academic year. Others available include: Level 2 Certificate in Understanding the Safe Handling of Medication Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Dignity and Safeguarding Level 2 Award in Helping Skills Level 2 Award in Prevention and Control of Infection Level 2 Award in Nutrition and Health Entry Requirements No previous training or experience is required for this programme but you must be over 19 before the course start date. Qualification ObtainedAward in Awareness of Dementia Industry Placement and Field TripsThis is a knowledge-only qualification; there are no work placements required and no field trips planned as part of this qualification. Learning and Teaching Methods The course is delivered over 6 weeks from the course start date through once weekly 4 hour classroom based sessions with a specialist course tutor. The tutor will also be available for weekly support and will guide you from the beginning to the completion of your qualification. Within these sessions there will be tutor delivery, question and answer, discussion, group work tasks and individual tasks. It is expected that you will complete a minimum of 4 hours independent study, each week, outside of the class to complete the assessment tasks which take the form of electronic workbooks. You will also have access to a Virtual Learning Platform which will provide you with additional resources to support completion of the qualification. Modules/Subjects Covered This course consists of the following 4 units: Dementia awareness The person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia Understand the factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care Expert Tutor All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. Assessment MethodsThere are no exams or graded assessments in this qualification. For each unit, assessment will be made following the completion of a workbook in which you will demonstrate your knowledge through written responses. Throughout the course you will receive regular feedback on the work that you submit which will contain guidance as to how to further improve and to support you to ensure that all criteria are passed. Other Costs and Equipment NeededFor completion of the assessment tasks, it is recommended that you either have access to devices at home such as a laptop or that you are able to attend college at additional times to access the IT facilities available. All other equipment/resources you require for this course are provided by B&FC at no extra cost.
