Human Biosciences - BSc Hons Degree - Topup

Summary

This degree continues from our foundation degree in Human Bioscience, topping up to a full BSc (Hons).  Designed with our industry partners, the programme provides a vocational exploration of human health and disease, while developing the practical, analytical and independent research skills considered essential for the workplace.

At B&FC, you will be taught by friendly, industry specialist tutors and have access to our industry-standard science laboratories, the ideal setting in which to practise professional practical techniques.

In this one-year programme, you will revisit genetic research, looking at how cell signalling affects us and potentially triggers certain diseases as well as examining the latest biotechnologies that are transforming the way we analyse, diagnose and respond to issues affecting the human body.

There are modules on drugs and disease and also on the research being carried out in the world of chronic diseases from which a significant proportion of the population suffer.

Finally, you will be invited to submit a dissertation on a topic within the curriculum that interests you. You will undertake independent research, review existing academic literature on the subject and formulate an argument which you will present in written format to the highest academic standards.

Student case study - Abigail Ansell

What have been the benefits of studying here?
The tutors and the facilities are incredible. The equipment is exactly like you would use in industry so it's a great introduction to lab work before you actually get into the workplace.

What are you hoping to do in the future?
I'm really interested in finding a position in lab work probably in a hospital setting. Pathology would definitely be one option as would haematology. Eventually, I'd like to head up a laboratory.

Where can this subject lead?

Career progression

Our students have secured exciting career opportunities with employers such as the NHS, as well as within areas such as science teaching. A BSc (Hons) degree opens up opportunities in areas like scientific research, working in the pharmaceutical industries for example or in science journalism or other forms of science communications.

Alternatively, there are plenty of options to pursue higher qualifications studying for Masters or Doctoral degrees many of which are sponsored by companies which will benefit from their research findings.
