What will I learn? Key information Where could this course take me? Course SummaryThis female-only evening course has been developed exclusively for women who would like to learn the basics of motor vehicle maintenance and repair. Teaching key skills including changing wheels, checking tyre pressures, ensuring correct levels for water, oil and brake fluid and much more besides, this practical programme will give participants the confidence to maintain their own cars and tackle minor issues in between professional servicing and repair. It has been designed both as a practical course for students who want to tackle small scale jobs for themselves and also as a springboard for those who would like to pursue a career in vehicle maintenance and who would like to progress onto our higher level programmes. Created specifically for female students who might feel more comfortable learning in a women-only environment, the course also aims to build confidence, communication and resilience whilst working within a team and also as an individual. As well as the female-only course, we offer the same course to a mixed gender group if that would be preferable. Entry Requirements No formal qualifications are required. You must, however, be a 19+ female student to attend Please note: Where wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is a mandatory requirement of the course, it is the responsibility of the learner to ensure that they are able to wear such equipment. Qualification ObtainedAward in Automotive Maintenance Industry Placement and Field TripsThere are no industry placements or field trips planned for this course. Learning and Teaching Methods The course introduces students to basic skills in the following areas: Checking fluid levels Diagnosing key faults Dealing with flat tyres and punctures Basic servicing skills Health and safety Teaching on the course is largely practical in nature with tutors demonstrating techniques and giving students the opportunity to practise them individually and as part of a team. Tutors then support students on a one-to-one basis giving advice and feedback during practical exercises. There is some theory work to allow participants to gain an understanding of materials and their attributes and key information on health and safety issues both in domestic settings and in the construction industry more generally. Meet the Expert Tutors All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. Career Options and Progression This course is an introduction to the automotive industry. Successful completion of this course means you can progress onto Level 2 and then Level 3 automotive courses and ultimately into degree level study if you wish. Reaching Level 3 will give you all the skills you need to progress confidently into the workplace in a general or specialist capacity. As well as the option of working for an employer, this will also open the door to self-employment, allowing you to run your own automotive workshop in the future.
