Amber Smith

Mathematics Functional Skills Co-ordinator

Amber Smith

Amber’s career path started in high school when her tutor inspired her to be creative. She has won multiple awards over the years for graphic design and maths. At college, she decided to take the graphic design route and continued on this path, gaining a degree with honours and her PGCE the year after.

While doing her degree and attending the PGCE course, Amber set up her own business as a freelance graphic designer, Green Pencils. She has worked with many companies, creating packaging and bespoke design work, as well as showing her work at a Manchester exhibition. Obsessed with technology, she was one of the first tutors to bring augmented reality to the College.

Straight after her PGCE Amber worked as a level 4 graphic design tutor until an opportunity came up for her to teach maths and English. She has now taught maths and English for two years and has enjoyed every minute. Her greatest passion is mathematics.

Professional Activities

Networking within my field helps me to keep up to date with changes in how maths and English are delivered as well as the curriculum specifications.

My annual industry experience with local businesses helps me to identify what is required by employers in terms of maths and English, which in turn informs how I teach new students the following year.

I attend weekly Staff Development, which is part of my professional development to further my sector knowledge. As Programme Leader in Maths and English, I have also delivered several Functional Skills training sessions myself.

Why B&FC?

All my further and higher education teaching has been at Blackpool and The Fylde College. I loved the staff and the atmosphere and I dreamt about having a job here.
