My Story

After leaving school in 1986 I enrolled at Blackpool and The Fylde College, where I gained additional GCE qualifications as well as 2 City & Guilds and 2 BTEC qualifications. From there I moved into the IT industry, initially as a COBOL programmer for a software company, developing applications for the healthcare industry.

I stayed with this company for the next thirty years, progressing to the role of IT manager. During that time, my skill set expanded from basic programming to knowledge of various Adobe products, website design and programming in various other languages. In 2017, I made the decision to return to education, despite knowing I was likely to be the oldest person on the course.

That didn’t matter though. When I returned to B&FC, I immediately felt at ease as I was in familiar surroundings. Meeting my tutors and discovering how approachable everyone was really helped my confidence. I’ve also been able to apply my extensive industry knowledge to my assignments.

  • round-the-clock support from tutors
  • extensive physical and online resources
  • support with academic and report writing
  • friendly, professional, collaborative learning environment
  • invaluable ongoing feedback

My Next Move...

Returning to B&FC to do the Foundation Degree Interactive Media Development was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’m now looking forward to starting the Honours year in September 2018.

My Opportunities

In May 2017, I secured the role of System Developer for WH Bowker Ltd in Bamber Bridge. It’s a role to which I’m able to bring all the skills and experience I’ve gained throughout my career as well as all the new skills I’ve learnt on my Foundation Degree.
