My Story

“I was working full time and my work suggested that I study for a degree, which would help me to better my skills in Human Resources. Someone on my team at work did a Level 3 qualification here and so he recommended the college to me. This massively influenced my decision to come here.”

“I really enjoyed going back to a school environment because I enjoy a bit of a challenge. I’ve learnt so many new things I didn’t know before like how to reference, and I’ve met lots of lovely people. Even though the course was only one day a week, I still felt like I was involved with the course and everybody on it, and I managed to fit it with work quite well. The classes were small but I felt that was just the right size for me to learn in. When I joined in January, there were students that had been there since September and so they had more knowledge of the topics that we would be learning later in the year. This was brilliant because it meant we could bounce ideas off of each other and then those of us who started in January could help the newer students that started the following September. The resources at the college were also fantastic. Even in term-time, it was never too busy for me to work in the library and there were always enough computers to use. Although at first it was difficult to come back to studying after almost 18 years, I have absolutely no doubt that I would not be in this position today if I had not made the leap to come back and I would definitely say to new starters that you get out of it what you put in, so work hard and try your best or it won’t be worth it.”

My Next Move...

“I have just resigned from my current job because I have been offered a new one. This new job has potential for me to become a Human Resources Director, which is probably my dream job or close to it! Thanks to my degree, I have the qualification and the confidence to know that I can do anything I want to do, and I hope to just keep moving up the ranks of this new company.”

My Opportunities

“I was already in full-time work when I joined the degree course and so I didn’t have the time or chance to carry out voluntary work or industrial placements, but I did get to go on a trip to see a mock tribunal at Forbes solicitors which was, not only useful, but really interesting and helpful to my course, because I got to see how it works in real life.”
