Studied BA Hons Graphic Design and Visual Communication at B&FC • Adult learner/career change
I’ve always been creative, and I had various creative side hustles alongside my previous job, but I decided to bite the bullet and go for it with a complete career change. Although I had previous qualifications, they weren’t related to the creative industries, however they showed I could study at this level. So, with these and a portfolio of work, I hesitantly visited B&FC on an open day and shortly afterwards enrolled on my course.
The small and friendly classes meant that I could experiment with different areas within Graphic Design and Visual Communication and I received the support and encouragement to really push myself. I learnt so many new skills, which opened my eyes to a variety of possibilities and different employment options. Being surrounded by other creatives and tutors with varying skills and backgrounds really adds to the experience and helped me decide on areas I wished to specialise in further.
My Next Move...My work is illustrative and mainly handcrafted 3d work combined with digital processes. The course enabled me to experiment trying out different methods of production, both traditional and digital, and I’d advise everyone to keep an open mind to different production processes. I currently work freelance for International Watch brand Olivia Burton and my work has been seen around the world. I have also won a coveted D&AD pencil which is getting my work seen by the best in the industry. My ambition is to be able to work freelance full time as a commercial illustrator, combining my skills in digital artwork along with my handcraft skills.
I’ve been lucky to have had some great opportunities while studying, including working with Lonsdale Saatchi & Saatchi on placement as well as working as a studio assistant on a project for Google.
