At 99 years of age, Sydney Deakin is a proud alumnus of Blackpool School of Arts.

His extraordinary journey spans decades of creativity, service and professional accomplishment, serving as a source of inspiration for generations through his passion and dedication.

In 2014, Sydney completed a poignant painting of Venice in his distinctive style. The piece, rich in emotion, was dedicated to the memory of his late wife, with whom he had revisited Venice after first seeing it during his service in the Navy. This work reflects his deep connection to places and people who have shaped his life. Beyond Venice, Sydney’s artistic talents are showcased in paintings of Liverpool and a striking depiction of a fox, proudly displayed at The Red Fox pub.

Sydney’s journey with Blackpool School of Arts began in 1939, a pivotal moment made possible through the encouragement of his art master and his wife, believed to be Mr and Mrs Stultine of Roseacre School. Their belief in his talent persuaded Sydney’s parents to allow him to pursue his passion for art.

Sydney’s early career saw him harness his artistic talents at R.H.O. Hills Department Store in Blackpool, where he worked as a window dresser. His creativity shone through in Christmas displays and artwork created to support the war effort, earning the approval of the store’s Board of Directors.

In 1941, Sydney joined the Royal Navy, serving his country during World War II. After the war, he returned to R.H.O. Hills before embarking on a new chapter with Marks & Spencer. Rising through the ranks, he became a store manager, overseeing branches across the North of England and playing a key role in opening and managing the Birken. He joined the Royal Society of Arts and was later honoured as a Fellow of the Society, highlighting his lifelong commitment to creativity and innovation.

Sydney reflects on his journey with gratitude for the teachers who saw his potential and nurtured it. Without their persistence and encouragement, he acknowledges he might never have discovered the opportunities that came his way. From window displays to store management, Sydney’s artistic foundation opened doors to an unexpected and fulfilling career path.

His advice to today’s young people is as relevant as ever:

"Trust your instincts whilst taking on board the advice of experienced tutors and teachers. Keep up with a full curriculum, persist with your dreams and be open to future possibilities."

Sydney Deakin’s story exemplifies the profound impact of education, the power of encouragement, and the limitless potential of creative expression. As an alumnus of Blackpool School of Arts, his journey inspires us to continue fostering talent, creativity, and ambition in our students.
