T Level success puts Paige on path to veterinary career

Blackpool and The Fylde College student Paige Wallis is celebrating outstanding BTEC results as she prepares to take the next step towards her ambition of becoming a vet.

Paige achieved a triple Distinction Star in Animal Management and has secured a place at the University of Lancashire, where she will begin a veterinary medicine degree.

Choosing an extended gave Paige the opportunity to combine her studies with the practical experience she felt would prepare her for a career working with animals.

I knew I wanted to work with animals, so the BTEC diploma really suited me because it was specialised and practical."

As part of her course, she completed a placement at Farmer Parr’s Animal World, where she gained hands-on experience with a wide range of animals. She also developed her communication skills by talking to visitors and groups about the animals in her care, experience she said she wouldn’t have got if she hadn’t been able to do a placement.

Paige said: “I knew I wanted to work with animals, so the BTEC diploma really suited me because it was specialised and practical. The hands-on experience has been a big part of it and the tutors have been really friendly and supportive.”

After starting A Levels but finding it just didn’t suit her, Paige credits the supportive environment at B&FC in helping her regain confidence, improve her grades and stay focused on her goal to become a vet.

Her next step will take her to the University of Lancashire to study veterinary medicine. Longer term, Paige is particularly interested in working with exotic animals and birds.
