Student Case Study: Nick Thomson Published on 10/10/2025 by DBUCK General “I liked that the T Level was hands-on, which gives you a head start whether you’re going on to university or getting a job.”Nick is en route to Teesside University after receiving a distinction in his T level results. The 19-year-old from Blackpool achieved the top mark, equivalent to three A grades at A Level, and is now set to study for a degree in paramedic science.Nick, a former pupil of St George’s High School, chose the T Level over A Levels because of the practical element. Twenty per cent of his two-year course was spent on placement at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. He was nominated for the Rising Star category in the NHS Education Awards during his studies. He said: “I liked that the T Level was hands-on, which gives you a head start whether you’re going on to university or getting a job.“I really enjoyed my placement because I got to work alongside the healthcare assistants and work with patients at different stages of their care.”He praised the college for its support. “Staff at college have been amazing, if you were struggling to understand any aspect of the work or they thought you were falling behind they would change their teaching style to accommodate your needs,” he said.“During the holidays the college provided opportunities for you to go in and practice the practical aspects of the course.”Of his distinction result, he added: “I was so nervous but now I’m buzzing.
