“I think it’s really beneficial to do the 315-hour work placement because it gives you such a good idea of what work is going to be like. You’re thrown right in.”

A T level in Health was the natural choice for Grace, some of whose family members have a long history of working in the healthcare sector. Looking to following in their footsteps, Grace chose her course as the starting point for her journey into adult nursing.

Deciding to study a T level allowed Grace to focus on a single subject area and also gave her the opportunity to gain extended practical experience during her T level placement, where she worked on the wards of a busy NHS hospital and at Clifton Homecare, a local company specialising in providing personal care in the community.

“I think it’s really beneficial to do the 315-hour work placement because it gives you such a good ideal of what work is going to be like. I’ve always loved hospital dramas on TV and obviously heard quite a bit about it from my family, but getting to do it for real was so much better. And it confirmed that I’ve made the right career choice too.”

Getting an unheard-of full marks in one of her exams and achieving a Distinction overall, Grace is now off to the University of Sheffield to start her degree in adult nursing and hopefully continue the family tradition of caring for others. With plans to secure a position in A&E or Resus when she graduates, Grace ultimately hopes to become a matron one day, climbing right to the top of her profession.
