If you're in year 11, you’re likely beginning to think about your next steps. With a wide range of choices, it can be overwhelming to decide on the right path - attending college open events is an excellent way to start.

Just as you carefully chose your high school, taking the time to research and visit prospective colleges can help you make a confident decision about your future.

Here’s our guide to making the most of your visit to Blackpool and The Fylde College's open events.
 

Register Ahead and Skip the Queues

It may seem like a simple step, but registering in advance for an open event ensures that the college is ready for your arrival. By letting us know you’re coming, we can provide a smoother, more personalised experience.

Plus, pre-registering helps avoid queuing at the registration desk, giving you more time to explore and speak to the tutors you’re eager to meet.

Here some initial questions to consider when you arrive:

  • Pathway Options - Do you see yourself on a full-time course, such as a T Level or technical qualification, or would you prefer an apprenticeship where you can earn while you learn?
  • Subject Interests - What subjects do you enjoy most in school? Are these topics you’d like to continue studying?
  • Support Needs -  Do you need advice on bus passes, bursaries, or additional support services?
  • Travel Logistics - Check the college’s location and plan your journey.
     
Having a plan helps ensure you cover the essentials and ask the right questions on the day.
 

Consider Your Career Goals

If you already have a specific career in mind, you can head straight to that curriculum area when you arrive, it’s a great way to save time and focus on what matters most to you.

If you’re exploring multiple career options, make a quick list (mentally or on your phone) of the areas you want to learn about, and ask the team to point you in the right direction.

Make the Most of Your Time at the Event

Arrive and check in early. Colleagues will be available to guide you to the areas that interest you most. As you tour the college, you’ll have the chance to speak directly with tutors about the courses, the skills they’ll teach you, and the careers they can lead to.

Make sure to ask about course destinations (where students typically go after completing), success rates, and extra opportunities like guest speakers, workshops, and the best the college has to offer, from state-of-the-art learning facilities to engaging programmes.

Get a feel for the environment, and bring along a few key questions to help you see if it’s the right place for you.
