New Foundation Apprenticeships Set to Open Doors for Young People Across the Fylde Coast
A major new apprenticeship pathway designed to help young people take their first steps into work is coming to B&FC this September. Foundation Apprenticeships combine paid employment with practical training, giving young people the opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience while developing the skills employers need.
Launched as part of Skills England's apprenticeship reforms, the programmes are designed to bridge the gap between education and employment and create clear routes into skilled careers.
New for September 2026:
- Catering and Hospitality
- Engineering and Manufacturing
- Building Service Engineering
Coming soon, Health and Social Care Foundation Apprenticeship, with further programmes expected to follow in the future.
Bridging the Gap Between Education and Employment
For many young people, moving directly into a full apprenticeship or specialist role can feel like a daunting step. Foundation Apprenticeships have been created to provide additional support, helping learners build confidence, develop workplace behaviours and gain valuable industry experience while earning a wage.
Each programme combines paid employment with structured learning, enabling apprentices to gain technical knowledge alongside essential skills such as teamwork, communication and professionalism. On completion, learners can progress into employment or move on to a Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeship, creating a clear pathway into long-term career opportunities.
Developing Talent for Key Industries
The new programmes focus on sectors experiencing strong demand for skilled workers, helping employers develop future talent while giving young people access to rewarding and sustainable careers.
The Catering and Hospitality pathway will introduce apprentices to one of the UK's largest employment sectors, preparing them for careers across hotels, restaurants, cafés, holiday parks and other hospitality settings.
Engineering and Manufacturing apprentices will gain experience in activities such as production, assembly, fabrication and maintenance, building skills that are in demand across sectors including automotive, energy and advanced manufacturing.
Meanwhile, the Building Service Engineering pathway will support careers in areas such as plumbing, refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump technology, reflecting the growing importance of sustainability and energy efficiency within the construction sector.
A Win for Employers Too
Foundation Apprenticeships are designed to benefit employers as well as learners. The programmes provide businesses with access to a wider pool of emerging talent and a practical way to nurture future employees from the start of their careers. Apprentices receive additional support as they develop their skills and confidence, helping employers build capability and address workforce challenges.
Under current Department for Education funding rules, eligible employers may also be able to access financial support of up to £2,000 per Foundation Apprentice, subject to eligibility, retention and progression requirements.
Looking Ahead
The College is working closely with awarding organisations and sector bodies to complete programme validation and hopes to welcome its first Foundation Apprentices later this year.
As B&FC continues to expand its apprenticeship offer, Foundation Apprenticeships will provide another important route for young people to gain experience, build confidence and begin rewarding careers in industries that need skilled talent now more than ever. They represent an exciting opportunity for learners, employers and the wider Fylde Coast economy.
