Debunking Common Myths Surrounding Apprenticeships
Published on 21/01/2025 by
Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to gain valuable skills, earn a qualification, and build a rewarding career, yet many misconceptions still surround them.
These myths can prevent individuals and employers from fully understanding the benefits apprenticeships offer, from advancing careers to addressing skills gaps in the workplace.
In this blog, we’re tackling some of the most common myths about apprenticeships to separate fact from fiction. Whether you’re considering an apprenticeship yourself or thinking about offering one as an employer, we’ll clear up the confusion and provide the clarity you need to make informed decisions. Let’s dive in and debunk those myths!
“Aren’t apprenticeships just for young people?”
Many people mistakenly believe that apprenticeships are only for young people. In reality, apprenticeships are available to anyone aged 16 or older. They can be a valuable tool at any stage of your career, helping you advance into management, transition into project management, or even explore new sectors like digital industries.
“Will I need to be away from my workplace?”
Another common misconception involves the 20% off-the-job training requirement, which typically amounts to about six hours per week for full-time employees. Many assume this time must be spent away from work, such as at college or home, but that’s not always true. Off-the-job training can often be integrated into your workplace activities, allowing you to develop skills while fulfilling different roles. This might include shadowing colleagues, participating in mentoring sessions, researching for upcoming projects, or attending webinars.
“Don’t I have to be working full-time?”
We’re often asked if it’s possible to do an apprenticeship while working part-time. The answer is yes! If you work 30 hours or more per week, you can complete an apprenticeship within the standard recommended timeframe. For those working fewer than 30 hours per week, the programme duration will be adjusted to allow for completion over an extended period.
“Who is going to pay for it?”
There’s often confusion about who covers the cost of an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are always funded by the employer. However, the funding process varies depending on whether the organization is a Levy-paying or Non-Levy-paying employer. “Are apprenticeships only for manual roles?”
The final myth to debunk is that apprenticeships are only for manual roles. This isn’t true. Blackpool and The Fylde College offers a diverse range of apprenticeships, from Automotive to Hair & Beauty. We also provide programmes in areas like Digital, Business, and Project Management, with qualifications ranging from Level 2 to Level 6. We hope this has answered some of your questions.
