Today, in a fitting end to English Tourism week, Blackpool and The Fylde College welcomed employers as part of B&FC’s sector-based work academy programmes (SWAP).

SWAP helps to improve the job prospects of local unemployed people, working with employers to tailor training to fulfil their business needs and deliver relevant skills. Run in conjunction with DWP and Inspira to get people into employment, the programme provides pre-employment training in valuable skills such as food safety, front of house and customer service. This afternoon students got to put these skills into practice creating a delicious two course meal.

The programme culminates in every student having a guaranteed job interview for live vacancies and today was the day! Local employers, from notable companies such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Hotel Sheraton and Elgin Hotel called into College to interview B&FC’s SWAP students with the hope of filling job vacancies.

One of the students on the SWAP programme Michael said “I’ve loved every minute, tutors are brilliant and made it so easy. I’ve learnt so much, my confidence has grown in all aspects. I’ve secured a job and it’s thanks to the college. I’d recommend it to anyone. I want to be a top chef one day!"

B&FC alumni Peter Cox, who studied Travel and Tourism and went on to do a Hospitality degree at the University Centre, now works for Hotel Sheraton and said:

“Employing locally is the way forwards. Partnerships with local employers are stronger than ever, we trust B&FC to provide high calibre employees and have had success with this programme. As an ex-student, it’s important to me to support the college and offer these opportunities.”
