There was a time when searching the net meant something completely different for the maritime industry.

But with large numbers of people now using the internet to look for information on careers at sea, it is more important than ever to ensure potential students can access quality career and training information online.

Blackpool and The Fylde College’s Fleetwood Nautical Campus took the opportunity to launch its new website during a College Careers Day this weekend.

Head of Fleetwood Nautical Campus Neil Atkinson said: “We spent a long time gathering information from students about what people wanted from our website.

“We already knew that being mobile device-friendly was extremely important. And with many of our customers being from around the UK – or even in many cases internationally based – they were keen to see audio visual opportunities showing campus facilities.

“The new website will allow us to better engage with potential students and employers online and is much more responsive to their needs.

“A number of leading industry figures attended our careers day on Saturday and they were all very impressed by what the new site offered.”

The website features information about all the courses and facilities available at Fleetwood Nautical Campus, including health and safety and first aid courses at the Offshore Survival Centre, the Fire Ground, Marine Engineering Centre and bridge and engine room simulators.

Almost 400 people attended the Open Day on Saturday, with potential students attending from as far afield as Wiltshire and Scotland, to speak to College staff and representatives from industry.

The College has this year seen record number of applications for its new Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Shipping and Maritime Operations.

Mr Atkinson added: “I was delighted to see such large numbers of people attending our open day this weekend and it just proves that a career at sea remains attractive to people from a wide range of backgrounds.

“Traditionally, the route into a merchant navy career was through a sponsored cadetship via a shipping company, but with the Level 3 diploma there is a new pathway into industry with a high probability of employment as a result.”

Blackpool and The Fylde College is rated Ofsted Grade 1 Outstanding and focuses on aspects of education and training which are needed to drive the economy, deliver a skilled workforce for industry and secure sustainable employment for students.
