Roberta Austin, Centre Manager at Blackpool and The Fylde College’s construction training centre, Build Up, has been presented with her MBE for services to Vocational Education by The Princess Royal.
Roberta travelled to Buckingham Palace to collect her medal, after being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 2014.
During her time with Blackpool and The Fylde College, Roberta has overseen almost 4,000 local people into employment in the construction industry and is the first point of contact for a number of employers and contractors when they require staff.
Commenting, Roberta said: “Receiving the award is a moment I will never forget; I only wish my whole team was with me as I truly believe that this honour is for all of us. The day was wonderful and I have never seen anything as grand as Buckingham Palace.”
It wasn’t Roberta’s first brush with royalty and it seems she made quite an impression.
She added: “I was given my MBE by the Princess Royal and what was lovely was that she remembered me from meeting me in London last July. I was there previously to collect Build Up’s Community Programme Award from the Howard League for Penal Reform. I feel very lucky – not many people get to meet a royal twice in a year and I would love to thank the College for all their assistance.”
