A Blackpool and The Fylde College programme to set people on course for a career in the nautical industry has had a 100% success rate.
The Ofsted Outstanding-rated College developed the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Shipping and Maritime Operations at its Fleetwood Nautical Campus to help students prepare for employment on the water.
In the past, the course was intended for shipping company-sponsored candidates undergoing an approved training scheme to become an officer in the merchant navy.
However, since the course was expanded to include non-sponsored students last year, all those who enrolled have successfully progressed in the industry – with the College keen to enrol even more students in the future.
Shajan Lukose, Head of Maritime Operations at B&FC, said:
"As those of us involved in the industry will know, embarking on a career in the merchant navy is extremely competitive. It is highly lucrative while allowing people to travel the world and meet colleagues from a wide range of different countries and cultures, with the possibility of tax-free earnings.
“Many of our students come to us having already been taken on by a company which is sponsoring their training, but opening up the Level 3 course to non-sponsored students provides greater opportunities within the industry.
“Following completion of the course, if not already sponsored, we ensure that all successful candidates get an interview with the shipping/ cadet training company to secure sponsorship to be a merchant navy cadet.
“We opened up the course last year and the entire initial non-sponsored intake has now progressed into further training and employment. This year we had more than double the amount of students take up the entry course, and are keen to grow it even further.
“It is particularly of interest to local people as they do not have to travel far to study and we promote the course and a maritime career in schools across Lancashire.”
The Level 3 course is considered as an entry qualification for wide variety of maritime employment including in river navigation, code vessel employability, the off-shore market and the merchant navy.
