Bragging rights were up for grabs as three North West colleges competed to find out who had the most skilful students.

Blackpool and The Fylde College took on Southport and Hugh Baird in the annual North West Skills Clash, a series of challenges covering everything from hairdressing to construction.

B&FC teams came first in four of the rounds, hosted at Southport College in front of industry expert judges. The Catering team excelled at producing a three-course meal in two hours, while Motorsport students had no problem working on a vehicle braking system to industry standards.

Budding games designers successfully added an exciting new dimension to a basic retro-style shooter computer game. Health and social care students came out on top after completing no less than four tasks, which including spotting hazards on a hospital ward and identifying different smells from a dementia reminiscence pack.

Nick Marsden, who helped the catering team to victory, said: “It was a challenging and exciting event to be involved with. We were able to show off our skills and individual initiatives in a pressured environment. We’re buzzing to have won.”
