Beauty Students Make Women Feel Fantastic

Staff and students from the Blackpool and The Fylde College’s School of Hairdressing, Beauty & Related Therapies have been helping to make women feel great about themselves as part of International Women’s Day.

The beauty trainees volunteered their time to attend the Blackpool-wide event at the Winter Gardens, offering complimentary makeovers and manicures to ladies who attended the festivities. The event gave them practical experience of working with new clients, allowed them to put their skills into practice and gave them a chance to add to their CVs and further improve their employability skills.

International Women’s Day has been established for over 100 years. Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. The theme for 2015 was “Make it Happen” and the Blackpool event saw a large number of local agencies unite to support women making a difference in their lives and in the community.

Student Bethany Barron, who is studying a Level 2 in Hair & Media Make-up, said: “By taking part in this amazing event I gained much so much valuable experience working with the public. I learned not only how to apply makeup to suit different clients individual needs, but also how to work with people who have specific physical and emotional needs. I improved my customer service skills and gained confidence in putting clients at ease.”

Rachaelle Leitch, a tutor at Blackpool and The Fylde College, added: “Taking part in an event like International Women’s Day is a fantastic opportunity for our learners to not only perfect their practical techniques on members of the public but also to improve their interpersonal skills and to experience the many rewards of working within the community and for charitable organisations.”
