Blackpool and The Fylde College has been honoured by Carers Trust Fylde Coast for its dedication to raising the aspirations of young carers.
Each year, the Trust presents an award to a local school or college who they feel has provided exceptional commitment to and support for young carers. This year, Blackpool and The Fylde College was chosen as the winner.
Dr Judith Poole, Head of Student Support and Wellbeing at Blackpool and The Fylde College, said: “To win this award in the company of some truly amazing individuals, for whom caring is a way of life, was humbling. I’m very proud for the Student Support and Wellbeing and FE Directorate teams at the College, who are a deserving cohort and who work tirelessly to improve the life chances for young carers attending B&FC every day.”
The College has stringent measures in place to ensure young carers can be the best they can be and break down perceived barriers to success. Students who are young carers are identified at or before enrolment as a result of liaison with the Carers’ Trust or by self-referral. All receive designated one-to-one support, including liaison with curriculum staff for understanding of needs and flexibility; signposting to both internal and external support agencies and for financial, study support and enrichment activities.
B&FC has previously been praised by the Carers’ Trust for the progress it has made with young carers throughout their college journey, promoting progression opportunities and raising aspirations at every level. The award also identified the College’s designated young adult carer lead workers, its excellent communication and participation in training and awareness sessions as reasons why it was voted as the winner of award.
Judith continued: “I was honoured to be a part of such a fantastic event, acknowledging the hard work and commitment of the Young Carers and of the Carers’ Trust itself, and having the opportunity to help in raising funds for the Trust. Congratulations to all of the winners and to the Carers’ Trust for hosting such a successful and inspirational event.”
