B&FC triumph in annual competition with fellow North West academic institutions Hugh Baird College and Southport College.

Blackpool and The Fylde College hosted and won this year’s hotly-anticipated Skills Clash, bringing together more than 130 students from across the region to compete in 18 curriculum-related challenges.

B&FC took top honours in 10 of the challenges:

  • Art and design
  • Car maintenance and repair
  • Barbering
  • Beauty therapy
  • Business
  • Catering
  • ‘Hollywood’ complete look
  • Hairdressing
  • Travel and tourism
  • Health and social care.

Following their Skills Clash success, Car maintenance and repair challenge winners signed up to compete in the prestigious WorldSkills UK event.

B&FC's Hannah Cummings, who took first place in the Beauty therapy challenge, said: "This experience has provided me with the opportunity to build my confidence and skills in my subject area.

"I have since been selected to contend at other competitions. I feel much more confident when applying for jobs as I can now add this to my CV.

"The support I have had from my tutors had made this all possible and I am grateful for having been selected to represent B&FC."

Students had five weeks to prepare for their challenges, and employer partners judged them.

Hugh Baird College took second place, with Southport College in third.

A Hugh Baird College spokesperson said: "Thank you your amazing students today, for making myself and my students welcome.

"They are a credit to you and the college. We all had a fabulous day and the hospitality was first class."

Over the six years of Skills Clash, B&FC have won twice, Hugh Baird once and Southport three times.

Kathy Seddon, B&FC's Manager for Students, explained: "Skills Clash is a fantastic event which really allows students to showcase their skills in a supportive and competitive environment.

"The atmosphere is consistently electric year on year and the students representing are a credit to their colleges.

"The highlight for me is always the results ceremony at the end of the day when you see all of the students supporting each other.

"Of course, it is fantastic to win and we are really proud to bring the trophy back home."
