Sports students score a call-up

Three College students have earned a call-up to the AFC Fylde first team.

The trio - Josh Kay, Joe Gregory and Carnan Dawson  - are Academy players on sports courses and were delighted to be included in the squad for the FA Trophy game against Warrington Town on Saturday.

Josh (pictured far left) made his debut in the 2-0 win, with an impressive 70 minutes of pitch time. Joe and Carnan were unused subs, but have now gained valuable matchday experience.

Their shot at the big time follows a recent training session at the College where first team players and coaches put the Academy players through their paces.

Dave Challinor, manager of AFC Fylde, commented:

"Saturday was a great day for the club, not just in terms of the result but also the emergence of some of our Academy players into the First Team squad. Josh Kay started the game and did very well in a slightly unfamiliar role for him. He can feel very proud of his debut having been thrown in at the deep end a little bit.

"Joe Gregory and Carnan Dawson also appeared on the bench for the first time this season. Both Joe and Carnan made a great impression during pre season, have continued to listen and develop and although neither got on the pitch, was a great experience for them both and hopefully given them more motivation to improve.

"Stories like this is the reason we run the Academy programme. We have a desire to develop our own younger players and provide them with a pathway through to the first team. It is a difficult path and really requires lads to take on board lots of information, process this and learn from their mistakes. Saturday shows though that it is possible."

The bench was also made up of Joey Mullen, who completed our two year academy programme last year, and 16-year-old James Sloane who is a part of the Youth Team.
