HE Science Pathways for 2024

Programme options

In 2024, we are introducing a new HE Science programme directly as the result of recommendations from employers.

The programme will be offered simultaneously as a traditional degree (split into a two-year foundation degree with a one-year BSc(Hons) top-up) and as a two-year higher apprenticeship or three-year degree apprenticeship. The diagram below shows the progression pathway from our existing Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications onto this programme which is split into three pathways, Industrial Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Science.

Career Progression

Our area is a hotspot for science research and industry, particularly in the three pathways identified, with these employers all paying into the apprenticeship levy hence the reason for offering the programme as both a degree and an apprenticeship. Either way, the programme qualifies students to work in the science industry in many sectors, not just limited to the three pathways, as they will become Applied Scientists first and foremost. Careers options include research scientist, quality control, inspection and analysis, microbiologist, environmental impact assessor, industrial chemist and more – there are hundreds if not thousands of job opportunities with many of these located in the North West.
