When Life Doesn't Go to Plan
We understand that unexpected circumstances can sometimes affect your ability to engage with your studies or perform to your full potential. Serious illness, bereavement, family emergencies, caring responsibilities, accidents, or other significant personal circumstances can all have an impact.
This section explains the support available when circumstances beyond your control affect your studies. It outlines the process for requesting Personal Mitigating Circumstances (PMC) and describes how you can apply for an Interruption of Study if you need to temporarily step away from your course.
The aim is not to disadvantage students who experience unexpected difficulties, but to provide a fair and consistent process for considering individual circumstances while maintaining academic standards.
Making an application as early as possible is important, as support options may vary depending on when the issue arises and the nature of the assessments affected.
You may find this section useful if:
- You become unwell before an assessment
- Personal circumstances affect your academic performance
- You need time away from your studies
- You are considering withdrawing from your course
- You are unsure what support may be available.
