What are functional skills?
Functional skills qualifications are designed to develop confidence and competence in English, Mathematics and ICT. Functional skills equip students with practical skills and ensure that you can make the most of further education, employment and everyday life.
Functional skills English provides the basis for effective communication and understanding across three subject skill areas; reading, writing and speaking and listening.
Functional skills maths is designed to meet the needs of the work place and is suitable for those people either actively looking for employment, as well as those in employment wishing to progress. The course will help you to gain a better understanding of how to apply maths in the ‘real world’ and develop skills you will use on a daily basis.
Functional skills ICT will help take your computer skills to the next level. You will discover how to use a computer and the internet safely, as well as making effective use of the different Microsoft software packages. You will learn how to present information using Microsoft PowerPoint, format professional emails and letters using Microsoft word in addition to using Microsoft Excel formulae to calculate data.
Here at Seasiders Learning Centre we have a dedicated team of highly qualified tutors who deliver their subject specialism to ensure you get the best learning experience to help you on your learning journey.
Why are functional skills important?
Functional skills provide key skills for life and employability. Employers want employees who can:
- communicate and use numbers confidently
- problem solve
- use technology effectively
Functional skills therefore will give you the skill set you need to help you gain new employment, progress within your current job role or perhaps
onto further education.
"Coming to Seasiders has helped me improve my confidence, both in myself and my ability to learn. I didn’t think it was possible for me to achieve my Level 2 maths but after working hard I have passed and I’ve now moved onto doing my GCSE Maths. I’m hoping to be able to start my Childcare Level 3 course in September."
"The teachers at Seasiders are really good at what they do. I didn’t think I would ever complete a FS course but now I can’t get enough of learning. I started last year with English and I have since enrolled onto both Maths and ICT. Seasiders is a great learning centre and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to further themselves."
"Getting my functional skills qualifications has really helped me grow as a person, I’ve recently started a new job and I am looking forward to moving on in my life. I want to prove to my family that I can do well."
