Short Course // Professional Sewing Skills

This short course will introduce you to a range of professional garment construction techniques and will form a fundamental skill base in terms of production methods for fashion and/costume. The classes will support your skills development in terms of garment production and help you to improve and develop as a designer/maker. Leading from the short course in Pattern Making, you will be able to develop your pattern adaptations through to garments. There will be a series of demonstrations of professional techniques and tips for a quality finish.
No prior qualifications are necessary for this short course, however a basic level of mathematical problem solving and some sewing skills would be useful.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Each of the sessions will begin with a tutor demonstration of specialist techniques and you will progress through a series of practical tasks. An indicative schedule for the short course is as below.
Week 1 – An Introduction to a Range of Quality Fabrics and their Characteristics and Uses
Week 2 – Working with Challenging Fabrics, Seams and Darts
Week 3 – Concealed Zip Demonstration
Week 4 – The Professional Finish – Understitching
Week 5 – Traditional and Faced Waistbands
Weeks 6/7 – Completion of Projects
Industry Placement and Field Trips

All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice.
