Fitness Coaching - Level 2
Summary
The Active IQ Level 2 Technical Occupational Entry in Fitness Coaching (Certificate) is a nationally recognised qualification approved by IfATE, Ofqual and the DfE, and aligned with the CIMSPA professional standards. This qualification is a pre-requisite to become a Level 3 Personal trainer.
This course is designed to equip you with the essential knowledge and practical skills to work as a fitness coach in a gym or health club setting. You’ll learn how to plan and deliver safe, effective exercise sessions, support clients in achieving their goals, and provide excellent customer service.
The programme is delivered through a blend of Active IQ eLearning and B&FC tutor-led lectures and workshops, with practical assessments and real-world scenarios to prepare you for employment in the fitness industry.

Entry Requirements
To be considered for this course, you must:
- Be aged 16 or over
- Have a Functional Skills qualification in Maths and English (or higher)
- Possess basic digital literacy skills
- Have some experience of gym-based exercise (including free weights)
- Maintain a good level of personal fitness

Neil Salanki is a dedicated sports and exercise science professional with a distinguished academic background, including a BASES endorsed MSc degree in Sports and exercise science. Over the past decade, Neil has held various roles in higher education and the sports industry, notably as a Programme Leader and Lecturer at Blackpool and Fylde College and other higher education institutions. He has coached world record holders and managed extensive sports programs. Outside of his professional life, Neil enjoys running, hiking, and traveling, and is passionate about promoting a healthy lifestyle. He aims to further his career in academia and research, with aspirations to complete a PhD and contribute to the field of sports and exercise science.
How will I be assessed?
You will complete eight mandatory units:
1. Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise
2. Principles of Fitness Training
3. Principles of Nutrition and Lifestyle
4. Health and Safety in a Fitness Environment
5. Professionalism and Customer Care
6. Conducting Client Consultations
7. Planning and Delivering Fitness Sessions
8. Leisure Team Operations
Assessment methods include:
- Knowledge assessments (multiple choice, short answer, scenario-based)
- Assignments and case studies
- Practical observations and questioning
- Modular and summative observations (e.g. consultations, group sessions)
All assessments must be passed to achieve the qualification. The overall grade is Pass/Refer.
