Nutrition for Health, Weight Management and Sports Performance - Level 4

Summary

This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to apply evidence-based nutritional science and healthy eating guidelines. Students will understand how nutrition impacts health, exercise, sport, and athletic performance, including:

  • The limitations and risks of supplements and performance aids
  • The importance of hydration for sports performance

Students will support clients in understanding official guidelines related to personal food preferences and needs, covering:

  • Health and wellbeing
  • Weight management
  • Sports performance

Students will also learn to direct individuals to reputable sources of information when needed. Note: This qualification does not allow students to provide personalised diets or nutritional advice for medical conditions or elite athletes.

Entry Requirements

  • Students must be aged 18+
  • Students must be able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups (Level 2 English and Maths – Enrolling Tutor must see evidence of these)
  • Students must hold a Level 3 Certificate in Sport, health and/or fitness (or equivalent). Students without a Level 3 qualification will be considered with significant industry experience and the successful completion of a pre-screening assessment
  • Students must be able to apply factual and theoretical knowledge and be able to use a range of cognitive and practical skills to generate specific solutions for their clients. This will require students to work in predictable and unpredictable situations using knowledge, skills and competencies pitched at level 4 on the Regulated qualifications framework (RQF)

To be considered for this course, students must possess at least a Functional Skills qualification in Maths and English (or higher). Evidence of these qualifications must be provided prior to enrolment. Additionally, students are expected to have basic digital literacy skills to effectively engage with online learning and complete computer-based assessments.

While it is not compulsory, having access to a laptop or PC at home is beneficial. Nevertheless, you are welcome to use the college facilities if necessary.

You will study the following modules:

  • Unit 1: Nutrition for physical activity and exercise
  • Unit 2: Structure and Function of the Digestive system
  • Unit 3: Applied nutrition for exercise, sport and athletic performance
  • Unit 4: Supplements, performance aids and hydration for sports performance
  • Unit 5: Providing dietary advice to support the needs of different athletes and sport people

You will apply the principles of nutrition to support performance in exercise, sport and athletics within scope of practice.
