Summary

This course is an exciting programme developing the skills, experience, knowledge and behaviours to support progression to a Business T Level or an alternate Level 3 qualification. Successful completion of this course can also lead directly to employment or an apprenticeship. The programme focuses on key areas of Business and Management designed to broaden your understanding and provide you with a solid knowledge and skills base to prepare you for progression and higher level study.

Alongside your main programme, you will be able to develop your Maths and English skills, both of which are vital in the Business sector, ensuring you have all the relevant qualifications should you aspired to progress to further study. Work experience, and/or placement, will also be a part of your course and, along with the support of the experienced teaching team, you will have a fun-filled, engaging year with us preparing for your journey into employment!

This programme is aimed at students who want to pursue a career in business and is primarily designed to prepare them for progressing to the next level of study. Providing key foundational knowledge, students will be ideally placed to move into more specialist areas of business such as marketing, finance, administration or human resources as they develop their understanding and sharpen their business acumen.

The course also lends itself to those seeking to secure entry-level work in the business sector and provides a good basis for anyone looking to apply for a business apprenticeship.

A minimum of 4 grade 3's at GCSE including BOTH GCSE Maths and English Language along with the following:

  • A successful interview with a tutor
  • The ability to study independently
  • A genuine interest in the subject
  • Good communication skills
  • A hardworking approach towards your studies
  • Willingness to undertake work placement/experience as required

Qualification obtained

Certificate in Principles of Business Administration (VRQ)

Fees and funding

Courses for learners who are 16-18 years old at the start of their course and resident in the UK are fully funded. You may also be entitled to further financial help to support your studies depending on your personal circumstances. Extra costs and equipment

All students are expected to provide their own stationery. 

An extra curricular calendar, including optional field trips, will be made available at the start of the academic year. These are not mandatory, but may, in some case, incur a cost, details of which will be made available to you at the start of the course.

What will I learn?

This qualification aims to:

  • focus on the study of the business and enterprise sector
  • offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge
  • provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills

The study of business and enterprise involves understanding key areas such as legal structures, marketing, market research, operations management, resource planning, human resources, funding, finance and business and enterprise planning.

You will also focus on and develop the following knowledge and key skills required by employers:

  • adapting ideas and responding to feedback
  • considering cost efficiency and effective use of resources
  • analysing data and making calculations
  • decision making
  • planning
  • evaluation skills, responding to data, independent working, working to deadlines and efficient use of resources
  • an ability to reflect upon their preferred learning style and identify relevant study skills

Essential skills: English and Maths

All school leavers at B&FC are encouraged to continue developing their English and maths skills as higher ability in both these subjects is linked to long-term career success and increased earning potential - irrespective of how well you performed at GCSE. If, however, you achieve a GCSE Grade 3 or less in either subject, you will also have the opportunity to work towards re-sitting these to enhance your paper-based qualifications. This won’t delay your career journey because you will be undertaking this programme of study at the same time as your chosen subject.

Industry placement, field trips and guest speakers

Guest speakers are an integral part of the course as we want you to be able to relate to the sector you are planning on working in and hearing about job roles, opportunities and experiences of others will help you to build on your understanding of your career and what lies ahead.

Work experience and/or placement, which will be arranged by the College, is a mandatory element of your course you will be required to complete a minimum number of hours  Details of these together with information about optional field trips will be provided at the start of your course.

How will I learn?

This is a full time course involving 3 days a week in College with the remaining 2 days a week designated for placement and/or work experience in industry.

At Blackpool and The Fylde College we recognise that all students learn differently and for some it may be a return to the classroom following a break from formal learning.  Our tutors work with you to ensure that their teaching methods support the way that you like to learn.

You will work collaboratively with your peers in group work, presentations and within practical sessions. There will be dedicated individual/self-study time on your programme which needs to be supported by your own study out of the College learning environments.  E-learning is also a key element of all our courses and will involve you using our Canvas platform for independent study and learning.

Within the curriculum we also use a range of on-line apps to support, enhance and motivate learning.  Your tutors will be support you with new technologies used in the classroom.

Expert tutors

All tutors involved in the delivery of school leaver courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver.

Our recruitment process ensures that tutors delivering a given programme are suitably qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. The aim of this is to enrich our students’ learning experience and enable them them to get the inside track on what working in the industry is really like.

How will I be assessed?

To successfully complete this qualification, you will undertake and complete 5 mandatory units (listed below) and 2 optional units, these taken from a range of units with the specific aim being to prepare you for your next steps and level 3. This qualification is internally assessed and you will build up a portfolio of evidence using the methods and approaches mentioned above.

  • Business document production and information management
  • Communication in a business environment
  • Employer organisations
  • Developing working relationships

The 2 optional units include the following; 2 will be selected: 

  • Exploring social media
  • Digital marketing
  • Team leading
  • Research in business
