Applied Sciences (Analytical Chemistry) - BSc Hons Degree (Top Up)

Summary

This is a progression course from the Applied Science - Foundation Degree to the BSc (Hons) Applied Science (Analytical Chemistry).

The BSc (Hons) Applied Science (Analytical Chemistry) Top-up Degree provides an advanced level of study for those who have completed the Foundation Degree in Applied Science (Analytical Chemistry) and wish to gain a full honours qualification. This programme has been designed in collaboration with local and regional employers to ensure it meets the needs of the modern scientific workplace and supports the development of highly employable, technically skilled, and critically minded analytical chemists.

Analytical chemists play a vital role in society by using advanced instrumentation and data analysis techniques to investigate the chemical composition of substances. Their expertise ensures the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance of a wide range of products across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, clinical sciences, biotechnology, environmental monitoring, and chemical or polymer manufacturing.

Throughout this top-up degree, you will engage critically with the latest research and scientific literature in the field of applied science. You will develop an awareness of the evolving nature of analytical science and enhance your ability to work independently, applying creative and evidence-based approaches to solving complex scientific problems. The programme builds on the technical and theoretical foundations established at foundation degree level, enabling you to refine your laboratory practice, data analysis, and scientific communication skills to professional standards.

Where can this subject lead?

Career progression

The UK analytical science sector provides excellent career opportunities for graduates with strong practical and problem-solving skills. Analytical scientists play a crucial role in ensuring product quality, safety, and compliance across industries such as pharmaceuticals, food and drink, environmental monitoring, forensics, and materials science.

Graduates can pursue roles in research and development, quality assurance, or laboratory management, using advanced analytical techniques to investigate chemical composition and performance. With continued investment in scientific innovation and regulation, this sector offers clear progression routes into specialist, supervisory, and research positions, as well as opportunities for further postgraduate or professional qualification study.

Next steps at B&FC

During their degree, some students realise that they want to inspire the next generation of learners and decide to pursue a career in teaching. If this is you, B&FC offers a one-year Post Graduate Certificate of Education giving you the opportunity to acquire the necessary qualification and skills to work in education.

Other study options

Students also have the opportunity to progress onto postgraduate research programmes at institutions throughout the North West and further afield..

Employment Opportunities

There are a range of possible careers you could enter including:

Chemical Analyst | Research Scientist | Process Chemist | Environmental Chemist | Materials Scientist | Pharmaceutical Researcher Quality Control Specialist | Analytical Chemist | Nanotechnologist
