Course SummaryThe Extended Diploma in Applied Science programme has been designed specifically to meet the needs of the national developments in Science. This programme will help your development in terms of knowledge application and experimental / practical science techniques. Students will develop a range of analytical and scientific skills and practical techniques of enquiry to enable them to apply knowledge and understanding to the workplace. During the course, students will be given the opportunity to identify and solve problems and will be able to communicate their arguments and analysis in a range of ways to different audiences, as well as promoting Lifelong Learning which is a key component of the course. The Science team comprises an enthusiastic team of academically and industrially experienced staff who are highly committed to the success of their students and to the overall success of the course. Entry Requirements5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including Maths along with the following: A successful interview with a tutor The ability to study independently A genuine interest in the subject Good communication skills Hardworking approach towards the industry All 16-18 year-old applicants will be invited to attend an interview to meet a tutor and ask any questions they may have about the course. Essential Skills - English and Maths If you achieve a grade 3 in GCSE Maths or English you will have to work towards re-sitting these subjects as part of your main study programme. Qualification ObtainedBTEC National Extended Diploma in Applied Science Industry Placement and Field TripsAs part of this course, you will be supported in completing a relevant work placement (minimum 20 hours). Our strong employer relationships allow you to gain valuable experience that will aid your future career potential. All planned field trips are included at no additional cost. Learning and Teaching MethodsWe use a variety of learning and teaching methods, designed to emphasise the link between knowledge and application. These include lectures, demonstrations, practical investigations, seminars, workshops, tutorials, project work, supervised independent learning, open and resource-based learning, e-learning and work placements. Teaching is both tutor-led and student-led, with group work playing a part as well as individual learning to provide a well-rounded learning experience that caters to different learning styles. The course comprises 400 hours of lectures and you will be expected to devote an additional 100 hours to blended (online) learning. Expert Tutors All staff involved in the delivery of further education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. Assessment MethodsYou will receive both formal and informal feedback throughout the course to help you develop and refine your scientific skills and knowledge. Career Options and ProgressionThe course has been developed with support from industry so that modules meet learner and employer requirements. A number of industry guest speakers are invited in throughout the course, and some employers may also provide work placement opportunities for our students. This course will enable students to progress onto an undergraduate degree or further professional qualification in a wide range of Science based/related areas. We have well-developed working relationships with a wide range of employers, through which we help and support learners into sustainable employment. Successful learners may also wish to convert this qualification into a full Honours degree by progressing to our FD/BSc Honours in Human Bioscience, FD/BSc Honours in Marine Biology & Coastal Zone Management or FD/BSc Environmental Science (Wastes, Resources and Technology) all taught at the University Centre in Central Blackpool.
