This course will provide you with the fundamental knowledge and skills and will prepare you for the Level 2 Animal Care Programme  to deepen your application in this field or explore career opportunities in the animal sector, or explore apprenticeships in animal care, or even working in roles such as kennel assistant.

No special equipment is required to join the Level 1 Animal Science programme for adults, necessary resources will be provided, during the course.

What will I learn?

Be able to assess the physical state of an animal.

Be able to administer preventative care to animals.

Industry placement, field trips and guest speakers

Guest speakers from the animal sector will share unique insights, experiences, and viewpoints that enrich the learning environment providing real-world knowledge and first-hand accounts from their field, helping students connect theory with practice.

How will I learn?

Contact hours:

5 hours per week from 10am - 3pm for 10 weeks.

The course will include:

  • 1.5 hour of practical investigation
  • 2 hours of classroom delivery and 1 hour workshop time
  • With 2 hours of independent study a week

Teaching methods will include:

Practical sessions with animals to teach handling, feeding, and observation techniques.

Combining face-to-face teaching with online resources, videos, and quizzes to enhance engagement.

Provide constructive and encouraging feedback during assessments and practical tasks to build learners' skills and confidence.

  • Personal Career Preparation
  • Principles of dealing with animal accommodation
  • Assist with Animal Accommodation
  • Assist with Feedstuffs for small animals
  • Assist with the Health and Wellbeing of Animals
  • Developing confidence working with Animals
  • Principles of the care of Animals

The modules will be assessed by various assessment methods including:

  • Written assessments in the form of essays and lab reports
  • Face to face delivery in the classroom
  • Practical sessions
  • Independent study and presentations, i.e. Guest Speakers
