Mental Health Awareness - Level 2

Summary

This course is designed for those wishing to enter a career in the health sector focusing on non-clinical roles such as therapist, counsellor, mental health worker, social worker amongst others. It will provide you with knowledge and awareness of a range of mental health related conditions and help prepare you for progression to the next level or, in many cases, employment.

Career progression

The level 2 Tech Health pathways are designed to offer various options for those completing successfully:

Option 1: 
Progression to the next level, in this case level 3; you will be able to opt for either our BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or our T level Health programme, both of which offer progression to university upon successful completion and meeting stipulated UCAS requirements.

Option 2:
Employment; you may decide that the knowledge and skills you have acquired offer you a direct route into the health sector and roles such as Healthcare Assistant (HCA), Mental Health Assistant, Care Assistant/Worker and other support roles.

Option 3:
Apprenticeships.

Entry Requirements

To be accepted on the course you must have at least GCSE grade 3 in either English Language or Maths (or both).

Applicants with Functional Skills Level 1 will also be eligible/considered.

Please note: If you have a GCSE grade 3 in English and/or Maths you will be required to resit these alongside your main course as per Government guidelines. Those with grade 2 in either GCSE will be able to undertake a Functional Skills qualification as an alternative.

Extra costs and equipment

You will need to provide your own writing materials, such as pens, paper and a folder to keep your college-work which can be purchased from any supplier.

You will be allocated a small budget to pay for any College printing costs, however, once you have exceeded the limit, you will be liable for any additional printing costs.

The current price for printing are as follows:

  • 1 sided Black White sheet A4 is 4p
  • 2 sided Black White sheet A4 is 8p
  • 1 sided Colour is 10p
  • 2 sided Colour is 20p

A DBS may be required for your work placement/experience however, the cost of this will be covered by the college. Should you require a DBS you will need to provide forms of identification such as birth certificate, passport etc.

Industry placement, field trips and guest speakers

Work experience and/or placement is a mandatory component of the course, and you will be expected to undertake and complete a minimum of 40 hours across the year.

Your placement will be with one of our local health care providers working closely with them to provide high levels of quality support and care to residents/clients.

This will give you an opportunity to relate your studies to your intended career and gain valuable insights and experience linked to mental health and the wider health care sector.

How will I learn?

Throughout the course, you will spend 3 days a week in College, and you are assessed using a range of methods resulting in completion of a portfolio of coursework.

Teaching is delivered in groups and supported by group activities and discussions with a focus on collaboration and participation. One-to-one support is also provided where required. Your timetable will also include time spent with teaching staff to support you in completing your written assessments.

When you start the course, we will assign you a progress tutor, who will support you throughout your time at college to ensure you reach your full potential. Their role will involve helping you to set academic and personal targets as well as develop career plans and employability skills.

Assessment will vary across the units and methods employed by tutors will include:
