Understanding Behaviour that Challenges - Level 2

Summary

This qualification (NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Behaviour that Challenges) is designed to increase awareness and understanding of behaviour in children and young people that challenges and its effects. Within the course you will explore causes of behaviour, how to deal with situations in an appropriate way and how pro-active strategies can be used to support positive behaviour.

This qualification will not only support employment opportunities, but also the possibility of progressing on to the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties as part of the level 2 teaching assistant pathway.

This course is ideal for those already working or volunteering in school, to develop their underpinning knowledge, but also for those looking to move into roles that work directly with children and young people in the learning environment such as teaching assistants, welfare support, breakfast/afterschool club assistants, SEND and 1-1 support.

You will be assigned a subject specialist course tutor who will deliver the scheduled sessions. The tutor will also be available for weekly support and to guide you from the beginning to the completion of your qualification.

The qualification is internally assessed using a range of methods including written assignments or tasks. Expert tuition is delivered by our industry specialists on this programme, with access to continued support to assist in completing your assignments.

Career progression

This qualification can assist with progressing into the role of supporting children and young people in school settings such as teaching assistants, welfare support, breakfast/afterschool club assistants, SEND and 1-1 support.

The specialist knowledge it provides will enhance individuals’ employment opportunities as well as support progression to related further study.

There may be opportunities to progress on to the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties as part of the level 2 teaching assistant pathway.

Entry Requirements

No previous training or experience is required for this programme, but you must be over 19 on the 31 August before the course start date. It is desirable for students to have obtained or be working towards their English GCSE at grade C/4 or Level 2 Functional Skills.

Extra costs and equipment

You will need to purchase study essentials such as a notepad and stationery. It is desirable for students to have access to an electronic device (e.g. laptop) for completing their assignments, however college facilities such as the library are available for you to access computers.

If you are looking to gain volunteer or employed experience in a school/college setting, you will need to arrange this yourself and complete the DBS with the setting, this is not provided by college.

Whilst we cover most of the essentials, some trips may incur extra cost to facilitate and students may wish to purchase weather appropriate clothing.

What will I learn?

Industry placement, field trips and guest speakers

This is a knowledge-only qualification; there are no industry placements and no field trips on this course.

How will I learn?

This course will be delivered face-to-face for 3 hours a week for 8 consecutive weeks (term time only) from the course start date. During each session, you will undertake a variety of activities with your peers, such as discussions, group work activities, research, and skills development.

It is expected that you will complete a minimum of 3 hours independent study, each week, outside of the class to complete the assessment tasks which take the form of assignments/tasks. These assessments will ideally be completed electronically, but hand-written assignments which are scanned and uploaded to the electronic portfolio can be accepted at level 2.

As part of this programme you will study a range of mandatory modules, including:

  • Unit 1 - Understanding Behaviour that Challenges
  • Unit 2 - Understanding How to Support Positive Behaviour
  • Unit 3 - Understanding the Importance of Effective Communication and the Management of Behaviour that Challenges
  • Unit 4 - Understanding the Role of Reflection and Support for those Involved in Incidents of Behaviour that Challenges
     

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods including written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or poster, charts, using case studies or a workbook.

You will complete assignments/tasks on a weekly basis and these will be uploaded to an electronic portfolio.
