Functional skills English provides the basis for effective communication and understanding across three subject skill areas; reading, writing and speaking and listening.
The study of English can broaden your skills and confidence, allowing you to develop skills that help you get on in life and work.
There are no previous qualifications required to undertake this course.
However, in order to determine the most suitable level of study for your needs, you will undertake and initial and diagnostic assessment prior to entry onto the course.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The course is delivered over 18 weeks where learners will take part in a number of sessions using a variety of different teaching methods.
All classes are three hours per week in college and will have the addition of homework/online learning each week for normally around 1-2 hours.
Towards the end of the course you may also get a practice paper to complete at home to help you prepare for the final assessment.

All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice.
