Mechatronics and Digital Control Systems - Level 4 Module (LLE)

It's not too late to start your degree-level journey with B&FC this September. We're here to guide you through your options and help you make the right choice for your future. Call: 01253 504322 or Email: admissions@blackpool.ac.uk

Summary

This Level 4 HN Flex module provides learners with a strong foundation in the technologies that underpin modern automated and digitally controlled engineering systems. By combining the study of Mechatronics and Digital Principles, learners will develop knowledge of sensors, actuators, control systems, digital logic, sequential systems, simulation techniques and fault-finding methods used in contemporary industrial environments.

The module explores how mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer-based technologies integrate to create intelligent automated systems. Learners will gain practical and theoretical understanding of system design, operation, testing and troubleshooting, alongside the digital technologies that support modern manufacturing, production and control processes.

Designed in line with Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) requirements, the module offers flexible, face-to-face delivery across two terms, allowing learners to study as a standalone higher technical module or as part of a wider Higher National qualification. The curriculum reflects current industry practice and supports the development of technical skills required for Industry 4.0, automation and digital transformation initiatives across a range of engineering sectors.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this Level 4 HN Flex / LLE module will normally be open to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:

• a Level 3 qualification in Engineering or a related subject, such as a BTEC National, T Level, or equivalent;

• A Levels, including a relevant subject such as mathematics, physics, engineering or a closely related discipline;

• a relevant Level 3 apprenticeship or equivalent vocational qualification in engineering or a related technical area;

• relevant industrial experience in an engineering, manufacturing, automation or technical role, supported by appropriate evidence and considered through the College’s recognition of prior learning (RPL) processes.

Applicants without formal qualifications but with substantial relevant work experience may be considered on an individual basis, in line with the College’s widening participation approach and Higher Education admissions policy. All applicants will be expected to demonstrate an appropriate level of numeracy, technical understanding and readiness for Level 4 study.

These entry requirements are consistent with those normally applied to HTQs in Engineering (England) and to Pearson Higher National Level 4 provision and are appropriate for learners entering through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) and HN Flex model.

Where can this subject lead?

Career progression

The Mechatronics and Digital Control Systems module is designed for learners who wish to develop higher level technical skills in automation, control engineering and digital technologies. The knowledge gained is highly relevant to industries that rely on automated equipment, intelligent control systems and advanced manufacturing processes, including aerospace, automotive, robotics, energy, rail, electronics, food production and process engineering.

The module can support progression into careers such as:

  • Mechatronics Technician
  • Automation Technician
  • Control Systems Technician
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technician
  • Robotics Technician
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Maintenance Engineer
  • Process Control Technician
  • PLC and Automation Programmer
  • Engineering Team Leader or Supervisor

For some learners, this module may be a standalone qualification that supports professional development, career progression or upskilling within their current role. For others, it may form part of a larger learning journey, contributing towards a Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND), degree apprenticeship or honours degree in engineering, automation, mechatronics or related disciplines.

As industries increasingly adopt Industry 4.0 technologies and smart manufacturing practices, there is growing demand for technicians and engineers who can integrate mechanical, electrical, electronic and digital control systems. This module provides a strong foundation for those seeking to develop specialist technical expertise and progress into more advanced engineering and leadership roles.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates can progress directly into a variety of engineering and technical roles, including Mechatronics Technician, Automation Technician, Control Systems Technician, Maintenance Engineer, Robotics Technician and PLC Technician, supporting the operation, maintenance and development of modern automated engineering systems across a wide range of industries.

How will I learn?

Delivery will be primarily face to face to support practical, hands-on learning and application within engineering contexts. However, a digital learning platform (Canvas) will be used to enhance delivery through:

  • access to teaching materials and learning resources
  • assignment briefs and submission points
  • feedback and tracking of progress
  • supporting independent study and flexible engagement

How will I be assessed?
