Summary
This Level 4 HN Flex module provides learners with a comprehensive introduction to industrial automation and electromechanical systems used in modern engineering environments. Combining the study of automation, robotics and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) with electrical machines and motion control technologies, the module develops the knowledge and skills required to understand, operate and support advanced manufacturing and automated production systems.
Learners will explore the principles of automated control, robotics, system programming, and industrial safety, alongside the operation, performance and selection of electrical machines including motors, generators, actuators and transducers. Through practical and theoretical study, learners will gain an understanding of how electrical and automated systems work together to deliver efficient, reliable and safe industrial processes.
Designed to meet Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) requirements, the module offers flexible, face to face delivery across two semesters, enabling learners to study as a standalone higher technical module or as part of a wider Higher National qualification. The content reflects current industry practice and supports progression into roles within manufacturing, automation, maintenance, controls engineering and related engineering sectors.
Entry Requirements
Entry to this Level 4 HN Flex / LLE module will normally be open to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:
• a Level 3 qualification in Engineering or a related subject, such as a BTEC National, T Level, or equivalent;
• A Levels, including a relevant subject such as mathematics, physics, engineering or a closely related discipline;
• a relevant Level 3 apprenticeship or equivalent vocational qualification in engineering or a related technical area;
• relevant industrial experience in an engineering, manufacturing, automation or technical role, supported by appropriate evidence and considered through the College’s recognition of prior learning (RPL) processes.
Applicants without formal qualifications but with substantial relevant work experience may be considered on an individual basis, in line with the College’s widening participation approach and Higher Education admissions policy. All applicants will be expected to demonstrate an appropriate level of numeracy, technical understanding and readiness for Level 4 study.
These entry requirements are consistent with those normally applied to HTQs in Engineering (England) and to Pearson Higher National Level 4 provision and are appropriate for learners entering through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) and HN Flex model.

Where can this subject lead?
Career progression
The Automation and Electromechanical Systems module provides valuable higher level technical knowledge for individuals working in, or seeking to progress into, a wide range of engineering and manufacturing sectors. These include advanced manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, energy, rail, process industries, robotics, industrial automation, maintenance engineering and smart manufacturing environments.
Learners will develop skills that are directly relevant to careers such as:
- Maintenance Engineer
- Automation Technician
- Control and Instrumentation Technician
- Electrical Engineering Technician
- Robotics Technician
- Manufacturing Engineer
- Mechatronics Technician
- PLC Programmer
- Production and Process Engineer
- Engineering Team Leader or Supervisor
For some learners, this module may be a standalone professional development opportunity, allowing them to gain specialist knowledge in automation, robotics and electrical machines to support career progression or upskilling within their current role. For others, it may form part of a wider Higher National qualification and provide a stepping stone towards completing a Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND), a degree level qualification, or professional engineering registration.
The module aligns with the increasing demand for engineering professionals who can work across both electrical and automated systems, supporting the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies and the digital transformation of manufacturing and industrial operations.
Next steps at B&FC
On successful completion of this 30‑credit Level 4 module, learners may progress in a number of ways, depending on their individual goals:
- progression into further Level 4 or Level 5 Higher National study in Engineering or a related discipline, where the module may contribute as a stackable component within a wider HNC/HND or HTQ pathway;
- progression into additional HN Flex modules to build further higher technical credit
progression into employment or enhanced technical roles
How will I learn?
Delivery will be primarily face to face to support practical, hands-on learning and application within engineering contexts. However, a digital learning platform (Canvas) will be used to enhance delivery through:
- access to teaching materials and learning resources
- assignment briefs and submission points
- feedback and tracking of progress
- supporting independent study and flexible engagement
How will I be assessed?
Automation, Robotics and PLC - 100% Coursework
Electrical Machines - Assignment and in-class Assessment
