Course Overview

This programme has been created to form part of a combined diploma course. Students may wish to pair this programme with subjects from other areas of the College, although it is recommended that you discuss your choices with the Science Department.

Science is highly valued by employers and universities, and is applicable to most careers. This course is weighted towards Biology and Chemistry and includes an average of one practical each week. It is the most well-resourced science programme in the area, with students experiencing high grade equipment to make them ready for immediate employment or higher education. B&FC science staff are expert tutors, highly qualified in their areas and up-to-date with industrial innovations.

You will develop your scientific approach, learn communication skills and gain a wide variety of practical abilities. The course qualifies you for a range of university programmes in most fields - just look on UCAS for qualifications from 2016 onwards. Students can also progress to our own Marine Biology and Human Bioscience degrees, as well as our highly rated Materials Science Degree Apprenticeship. Previous students are currently studying all over the UK.

Keep your options open with the Combined Diploma

Our Combined Diploma programme is for 16-18 year-olds who want to develop their passion and skills in more than one subject. Study this course alongside another Combined Diploma course, with one subject to be studied as a Double Diploma and the other as a Single Diploma. You will spend 3 days a week in College and up to 1 day on a relevant industry placement.

The Combined Diploma is equivalent to studying 3 A-levels, providing the maximum possible 168 UCAS points needed for university or a career in either subject. Successfully complete the course and you will gain a guaranteed place on one of our degree-level courses, awarded by Lancaster University (a UK top 10 university*).

The following subjects can be chosen for the Combined Diploma starting September 2020:

  • Animal Science (only available as a Double Diploma)

Entry Requirements

To do this course, you will need GCSE Science, Maths and English at minimum grade 4 (previously grade C), or equivalent.

If you are a year 11 student applying for this programme, we will compare your GCSE results with the minimum target grades set for you by your school. This will help us decide whether this is your most suitable programme of study. Other students, including those from outside the area, will have an opportunity to discuss their qualifications and experience to make sure they too are studying at the right level. For some programmes, we might need to observe you carrying out certain practical tasks before we can make you an offer.
