The focus is on developing your knowledge application, your experimental and practical engineering techniques, and preparing you to professionally present your findings. You will also work towards achieving your GCSEs in Maths and English so that by the end of course you are fully prepared to progress to one of our Level 3 options. Entry Requirements4 GCSEs grade 3 - 1 including English and Maths along with the following: • A successful interview with a tutor • The ability to study independently • A genuine interest in the subject • Hardworking approach towards the industry Essential Skills – English and Maths If you achieve a grade 3 in GCSE Maths or English you will have to work towards re-sitting these subjects as part of your main study programme. At B&FC, this won’t delay your career journey because you’re working towards these subjects at the same time as your chosen subject. Qualification ObtainedBTEC First Certificate in Engineering Industry Placement and Field TripsThis course has a work placement totalling at least 20 hours as well as mandatory field trips During the first part of the year you will develop your employability skills and research the engineering industry, including the local work placement opportunities. Your work placement will normally take place during the second part of the year. The College will fund your field trips. Learning and Teaching MethodsThis highly practical course is made up of the following: • Engineering practical (workshop-based, typically 7 hours per week) • Engineering/Industry theory (class-based, typically 6 hours per week) • Work experience/Work placement • Higher Education study skills • Tutorial Our expert tutors understand that everyone learns in different ways so they use a range of teaching methods to enable everyone to achieve their potential. Each week consists of around 16 timetabled hours, which includes 3 hours’ independent study. We will provide you with lots of support, including regular target setting and progress reviews. Expert Tutors All staff involved in the delivery of any courses within the College are approved to teach and/or assess the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering and/or assessing a given programme are appropriately qualified, with relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. Assessment MethodsDuring each module you will undertake a range of assignments, designed to assess your skills, experience and knowledge. These will consist of practical-based studies, research, written assignments, and individual and group presentations.
