Extra costs and equipmentYou will need to provide your own safety boots and overalls/boiler suit for practical activities. A typical pair of safety boots should cost no more than £12 and a pair of overalls £15. All other protective equipment will be provided by us. All tools and equipment are provided for practical sessions and access to computers and all software required for the course is available within the College facilities. You will be expected to provide your own pen, pencil, basic drawing equipment and a note pad. Industry placement, field trips and guest speakersWhile an industry placement is not mandatory, we have a comprehensive list of local employers who have provided opportunities for our adult students to gain valuable industry experience. There are no planned mandatory field trips. How will I learn? Whilst working towards your Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair qualification you will gain the knowledge and skills required to carry out a range of common vehicle repair and maintenance techniques and develop broader industry-specific behaviours. You will learn how to identify the different parts that make up the vehicle systems, how they work and how to remove and replace them as a qualified technician working in the industry would. You will be taught by tutors who have a wealth of industry experience and a passion for passing on their skills and experiences. Your tutors will get to know how you learn best and tailor their teaching methods to your needs. This course is mainly practical and is delivered as follows (hours shown are weekly): Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Practical (workshop – 5 hours) Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Theory (classroom – 2 hours) Independent Study (2 hours) The environment is supportive and includes regular target setting and reviews. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. How will I be assessed?Modules you will cover include: Health and Safety in a Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Workshop Automotive Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices Routine Vehicle Maintenance (Servicing) Automotive Engines and Related Components Vehicle Cooling and Lubrication Systems Vehicle Fuel, Ignition and Exhaust Systems Vehicle Electrical Systems Vehicle Braking, Suspension and Steering Systems Vehicle Transmission Systems You will be assessed by both practical skills assessments in the workshop (90%) and by online multiple-choice tests (10%).
